    Our story

    ​​For over 30 years, we’ve brought our artistry to the world’s creative industries, including film and television, immersive experiences, game development, consumer products and more. We take on projects of any storlek, scope or scale, from the earliest stages of creative development to manufacture and delivery anywhere in the world. 

    From humble beginnings in the back room of their Wellington flat, Richard and Tania have built Wētā Workshop into what it is today. Our 58,000 square-foot facility is home to a passionate, tight-knit team and houses a comprehensive range of departments across different disciplines.

  • Sir Richard Taylor

    Richard Taylor is the co-founder of the Weta companies and co-owner of Weta Workshop which he runs alongside his wife Tania Rodger in their home city of Wellington, New Zealand.

    With more than thirty years’ experience working in the world’s creative industries, Richard is the CEO and Design and Effects Supervisor of this award-winning company.  As a passionate creative at the core of Weta Workshop, Richard collaborates each day with his colleagues and friends across a diverse range of artistic and technical disciplines. With 330 crew and 17 departments, the Workshop can take on most creative challenges on offer.

    Richard has won five Academy Awards© across three disciplines, for special effects makeup, visual effects and costume design. He has also received four BAFTAs, two VES Awards and more than 30 national and international awards for his work within the creative industries.  In 2010 Richard was made a Knight Companion of the NZ Order of Merit for his servic

    The name of Richard Taylor is often mentioned in the same breath as Wellington special effects and design empire Weta — which Taylor helps command — and director Peter Jackson. The blockbuster success of The Lord of the Rings and King Kong has allowed Taylor to apply his imagination, lateral thinking and leadership skills across a range of areas, from monster-making and costume design, to children's TV programming.

    Taylor and his partner Tania Rodger have been helping bring Jackson's visions to life ever since the director's second film, Meet the Feebles. Having done so much work for one director, "there is an almost unwritten language between you", Taylor argues. "It means that you can move forward with intent, knowing that the director is always going to have thoughts and ideas, but he’s also confident that you’ll deliver what’s required and something special is going to come out of it in the end."
