He was best known for his roles as Lawrence Preston on The Defenders and as David Craig on The Bold Ones: The New Doctors. He won two Emmy Awards in and in He was also known for his roles in 12 Angry Men and Creepshow.
Marshall was born on June 18, in Owatonna, Minnesota to a Norwegian-German family.[1] He studied at Carleton College and at the University of Minnesota.

Among his film roles Marshall is perhaps best known as the unflappable and analytical Juror 4 in Sidney Lumet's courtroom drama 12 Angry Men ().[3][4][5] He played the President of the United States in Superman II (), and Nazi collaborator Henri Denault on the CBS prime-time drama Falcon Crest in Marshall was also known as the host of the radio drama series, CBS Radio Mystery Theater (–).
