She may not look much like Elvis Presley or even understand all his lyrics, but put Kazue Osawa on stage in her hot red jumpsuit and she feels the power of the King of Rock 'n' Roll.
Reared on traditional Japanese music in a small town, Osawa has gone on to cut an album of Elvis tribute songs and brings crowds to their feet by singing The King's "(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear."
Osawa, sporting blond-streaked hair and earrings the shape of Texas, is one of the Elvis enthusiasts of myriad nationalities heading to Memphis to mourn The King on the 30th anniversary of his death Thursday.
"He had this big heart, this ability to pull in a global audience in an age before the Internet," the singer, who tours Japan and North America as Kathy Osawa, said at a Tokyo cafe wearing a belt buckle with the initials "EP."
"He went beyond the artists who just got the crowds screaming. It's almost like a religion to try to give to people what Elvis had," she said.
