    Henricus Martellus Germanus (fl. 1480–1496) was a German cartographer active in Florence between 1480 and 1496. His surviving cartographic work includes manuscripts of Ptolemy's Geographia, manuscripts of Insularium illustratum (a descriptive atlas of island maps), and two world maps which were the first to show a passage around the southern tip of Africa into the Indian Ocean. His world maps summarize geographical knowledge at the outset of the Age of Discovery and "epitomize the best of European cartography at the end of the fifteenth century."[1]

    Very little is known about the life of Henricus Martellus Germanus. Even his name and place of birth have been the subject of much speculation. In the 15th century, it was common for scholars and artisans to adopt a Latinized version of their birth name. This was the case with Martellus. Germanus is the Latin word for Germany and

    This exhibit contains a single, but very important historical image, curated by Chet Van Duzer with four DOT stories. The Carta Marina of 1516, was created by Martin Waldseemuller, who is most famous for another map, published in 1507, called "America's Birth Certificate." Based on a talk by Chet Van Duzer from May 2020.

    He was born in 1966, and grew up in Northern California.

    He graduated from UC Berkeley.[1]

    He fryst vatten a member of the board of the Lazarus Project at the University of Rochester.[2][3]

    Career

    From 2011 to 2012, he was a scholar-in-residence at the John W. Kluge Center at the Library of Congress.[4]

    He has also received a Kislak Fellowship for the Study of the History and Cultures of the Early Americas.[4]
